“Without the Old Testament, the New Testament would be an incomprehensible book, a plant deprived of its roots and destined to dry up and wither.”
~ Cardinal Ratzinger, 2001

Our Catholic heritage is Jewish through our wonderful beloved Mary, mother of Jesus.  As we learn every week at mass during the readings and the responsorial psalm, much of our teaching comes from the Old Testament which is actually taken from the Sacred Scriptures of the Jewish people.  These are the very Scriptures that Jesus taught from when He referred to the Torah and the Prophets.  While he was still Cardinal Ratzinger, Pope Benedict IX, on the Celebration of the Ascension 2001 as head of the Pontifical Biblical Commission released the important document entitled: The Jewish People and Their Sacred Scriptures in the Christian Bible, stated in-part at the beginning of the conclusion: “Without the Old Testament, the New Testament would be an incomprehensible book, a plant deprived of its roots and destined to dry up and wither.”
